It’s Halloween and it is full of ghosts, goblins, and monsters out in the neighborhood Trick or Treat’ing. In the spirit of the season, let’s see if I can scare you.
Have you ever entered a building, or room, and felt that something was wrong but you couldn’t immediately identify what made you uncomfortable and anxious?
For weeks and months, your affiliate marketing business has been humming along. Traffic has been coming to your website and a reasonable number of visitors to your site are converting to customers.
Now it is quiet; it is deathly quiet.
Traffic is slumping. Conversions are drying up. Revenue is non-existent.
It is this situation that causes business owners to make fear-based decision, which are almost always bad decisions.
If you don’t know where and when your next meal is coming from, you’ll leap at and eat just about anything … and have ulcers.
The ability to be selective, to reject poor quality customers, to build a strong and secure business is inextricably linked to the size of the lead list you grow and control.
Real success requires a wave of leads coming to maturity at different times, largely at their own pace, so that some are ready everyday.
This means having leads that are being fed and fertilized, inside your own greenhouse (your marketing funnel) so that you do not have to go out every morning at dawn as a hunter.
Humanity itself thrived by replacing hunting with farming. The American Indian lost the battle with White Men not as much due to weaponry or sheer number but by starvation and by remaining hunters while the Whites created an agricultural system with stability and security.
If you are a hunter, you must be afraid.
There is no greater weakness or vulnerability than being dependent on the kindness of others. Others who are makers of customers and they permit you to parasitically feed on their customers.
Having your products sold in Wal-Mart can be fortune-making but if you can’t move those buyers into direct relationship with you and simultaneously track all activity necessary to create direct-to-consumer control and e-commerce, then you are dependent and therefore imperiled.
Every time you put a check from Wal-Mart in the bank, you should shudder in terror and this should scare you and your affiliate marketing business.
If you are feeding on leads and customers from affiliates, you drink from a tap with its faucet under someone else’s lock and key. What happens if they get offered a better deal or simply decide to keep all the water for themselves?
Of course, the axiom here is: dig YOUR well BEFORE YOU thirst … and end the astonishing tale of slumping sales.
Halloween is about scaring people and being scared for fun.
Enjoy yourself, for a day or two; and then get back to work as it is no fun to operate your affiliate marketing business on paper thin ice, inviting the next crisis or tragedy because you neglected fundamentals like building your own leads list.
Anyway, Happy Halloween!
